Blind Melon ~ No Rain

"No Rain" was Blind Melon's breakthrough (and only) hit from thier self-titled debut album. The song hit number one on multiple rock charts and number twenty on the pop charts. Many people associate "No Rain" with the official video that features the tap dancing "Bee Girl" character. Blind Melon went on to release two more albums before the death of lead singer Shannon Hoon caused them all to go thier seperate ways. Recently and twelve years since then, Blind melon has released a reunion album titled For My Friends featuring a new lead singer and thirteen new tracks. "No Rain" remains Blind Melon's highest charting song to date. It's a fun upbeat feel good song.

Sugarland is a Grammy Award winning country music duo composed of lead singer Jennifer Nettles and back-up singer/instrumentalist Kristian Bush. The duo was originally founded by Bush and Kristen Hall and became a trio when Jennifer Nettles was brought in as lead singer. Hall left the group after the release of Sugarland's debut album Twice the Speed of Life to persue songwriting. "Stay" is from Sugarland's second album Enjoy the Ride and written about infidelity and knowing when to let go. It is a beautiful, touching and emotional ballad.

Audioslave ~ Like A Stone

Audioslave was a rock band consisting of the former lead singer of Soundgarden Chris Cornell and the remaining instrumentalists of Rage Against the Machine. Audioslave's self-titled debut album was similar to the music the band was used to making and the record was certified triple platinum in the USA. "Like a Stone" was the second hit single from the album Audioslave. Cornell explained his lyrics:

"It's a song about concentrating on the afterlife you would hope for, rather than the normal monotheistic approach: You work really hard all your life to be a good person and a moral persona and fair and generous, and then you go to hell anyway."
After five years and three albums Audioslave called it quits. "Like a Stone" is by far my favorite song from Audioslave's short existance. This video performance is from Sydney's variety/talk program Rove Live.

Augustana ~ Boston

"Boston" was the first hit single by the band Augustana. It's original version was released on Augustana's first album Midwest Skies and Sleepless Mondays. The record was distributed at the band's first concerts and only a thousand copies were produced. "Boston" was reborn on Augustana's first album with Epic Records titled All the Stars and Boulevards. After being featured on the TV show One Tree Hill the nation took notice. Soon after "Boston" was featured on several shows on MTV and VH1. In this video of Augustana's performance of "Boston" on David Letterman, lead singer Dan Layus plays the piano (the same as in the album version). Often in live performances Layus replaces the piano with a guitar, but either way the song has heart and sounds great.

Mandy Moore ~ Gardenia

Multi-talented Mandy Moore started out as a young pop-singer, branched out into acting, and now after fours years has returned to her passion for music. Wild Hope is her fifth studio album, but the first to move away from mainstream. It is also the first full album in which she has written/co-written all of the songs herself. "Gardenia" is passionate, personal and somewhat sad, but I loved this song from the first listen. The video is Mandy Moore performing "Gardenia" live at the AT&T Blue Room.

Firstly, I wanted to mention that I have a severe dislike for the group singing on American Idol. I feel like I'm listening to an older people version of those Kidz Bop CDs. This week American Idol decided to butcher Jason Mraz's song "I'm Yours" from his third and most recent album We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. "I'm Yours" was a B-side to Mraz's second album Mr A-Z, and was made famous by recordings from his live shows. This video was made for Sessions@AOL. Heather Nova ~ Walking Higher

Heather Nova is a musician originally from Bermuda who has seen much success in Germany. She went to school to study film and often sat in class writing songs to go with them. Later she gave up on film study to persue a music career. Oyster is Heather Nova's third album and the first one I listened to. "Walking Higher" is a somber song about the loss of a loved one. It's a shame I couldn't find a video to post.

Corinne Bailey Rae ~ Like A Star

Corinne Bailey Rae is a soulful musician from England who's first album (self titled Corinne Bailey Rae) debuted at number one in the UK. Rae performed her first single from the album "Like A Star" at the 49th Grammy Awards and the following year it was nominated for Song of the Year, but lost out to Amy Winehouse's "Rehab". Rae's music career was put on hold when her husband died of suspected overdose in 2008.

Nine Inch Nails ~ Something I Can Never Have

The debut album of Nine Inch Nails, Pretty Hate Machine, which contained the original version of "Something I Can Never Have" was out of print for nearly ten years due to lead singer Trent Reznor's much publicized falling out with the original publishing label. And All That Could Have Been (also known as Halo 17) is a live album containing music recorded during the Fragility 2.0 U.S. tour. A limited edition set included a second disc titled Still which contained "deconstructed" versions of previous NIN songs including "Something I Can Never Have". This live version of the song loses the original's angry hard rock feel and brings the soft sounds of just a single guitar, Reznor's voice, and his piano.

Evanescence ~ Good Enough

Evanescence's second studio album The Open Door debuted at number one in the U.S. and a number of other countries and was certified platinum a little over a month after release. "Good Enough" is one of my favorite tracks from the album, but truth be told the whole thing is a great work of art. Lee thanked her husband, Josh Hartzler, for being the inspiration for "Good Enough" on the insert inside the album:

After gaining recognition for the contibutions Switchfoot made to the A Walk to Remember soundtrack their first major label debut album The Beautiful Letdown was eventually certified double platinum. Snow Patrol ~ Run

Formed in Scotland Snow Patrol did not breakthrough into mainstream success until the release of their third album Final Straw. "Run" was the first single off of the record. Since then "Run" has been covered by multiple artists including most recently Leona Lewis. I love this song because it is rough and emotional and the liver performance just makes it all the more so.

Adele ~ Chasing Pavements

Recently English singer Adele won a two Grammys: Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her debut album 19. A friend posted Adele's demo on Myspace and soon after a recording company was wanting to sign her. The offical music video for "Chasing Pavements" is very creative and centers around a car crash with Adele as an onlooker. Its a great video, but embeding was disabled so I'll link it later. This video is a live acoustic performance that showcases Adele's raw talent.

Ingrid Michaelson ~ Giving Up

You may have had a better chance to hear Ingrid Michaelson's music on TV rather than the radio. Her songs have been featured on various commercials and shows including Grey's Anatomy and One Tree Hill. Be OK is Michaelson's third album. The title single is in support of the Stand Up To Cancer Foundation. "Giving up" is my favorite song so far. It was featured in the season 4 finale of Grey's Anatomy. Plumb ~ Damaged

First off, I admit it. I liked the movie Drive Me Crazy. When Melissa Joan Hart cried they turned up the song "Stranded" by the christian singer Plumb. So that lead me to listen to Plumb's second album candycoatedwaterdrops which features the song "Damaged". Plumb wrote "Damaged" about a girl coping with being molested as a child. Shortly after Plumb wanted to leave the music scene, but response to "Damage" from fans made her stay.

Dashboard Confessionals ~ Screaming Infidelities

Chris Carrabba's second album with his origially planned to be solo project Dashboard Confessionals was called The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most. It featured revisions of "Screaming Infidelities" and "Again I Go Unnoticed" which were also on the growing band's first album The Swiss Army Romance. This video for "Screaming Infidelities" was voted on by viewers and won the MTV2 award in 2002. Its a very well put together video and the song speaks for itself. Carrabba's music and lyrics are heartfelt and well written.

Canadian rockers Our Lady peace reached international fame with thier second album Clumsy. "4 A.M." is a song based on a dream that the lead singer, Raine Maida, had about his father dying without getting to say how much he loved him. The title "4 A.M." refers to the time the song was completed and stands for Maida's father's initials, Adam Maida. The audience sings along some in the begining of the video, but for a live performance of this song thats not unusual to hear.

Scottish singer/songwriter Annie Lennox was a member of the famous duo the Eurythmics. Her debut solo album Diva which has been certified quadruple platinum contains three songs that were hits in the U.S. "Why" "Walking on Broken Glass" and "Little Bird". Imogen Heap ~ The Moment I Said It

I first heard the British songstress Imogen Heap (formally part of Frou Frou) on SNL. It was during one of those skits where they kept repeating a small part of the song which makes you then want to go listen to the rest. "The Moment I said It" is from her second album two time Grammy nominated Speak For Yourself. I personally, love the whole album. She's an amazing songwriter with a unique soul. Besides owning the recording company Megaphonic Records, Imogen Heap wrote, produced and mixed the album. Many of her songs have been featured on television shows.

Cold ~ Suffocate

Cold's third album Year of the Spider was much anticipated after a year of Geffen Records pushing back the release date. "Sufficate" was the second single to be pumped to the radio stations. Sadly, there was no video made for the song, eventhough plans had been made for one. The band released one more album after changing recording companies and then disbanded. Rumors of a new album and a possible reunion tour have recently been confirmed.

Dido's album No Angel was the top selling album worldwide in 2001. The album went on to produce two top ten singles and two reaching the top twenty-five. I wouldn't call myself a very religious person. Christian music is not that often found on my playlist. I came across Nichole Nordeman from an acquaintance in high school. I really enjoyed her music. I would think the lyrics would speak to many people because whether religious or not, I think we all have our doubts on "the truth" sometimes.
